M.A.D. Science Workshop

The Adventures In Learning M.A.D. Science workshop is more than just science experiments that entertain, awe and excite students of all grade levels. It’s a way for students to learn how to decode the mysteries of chemical reactions, matter, and energy while identifying the different forms and types of force, motion and energy using scientific investigation and reasoning. From creating Non-Newtonian liquids to making their own alien guts, students will have a hands on approach to learning skills that will help them theorize, test and record scientific observations using the evidence they have gathered from each experiment. nWhat will happen when you mix cooking oil, water, food coloring and Alka-Seltzer? Should you throw them all haphazardly and in random quantities into the largest container you find? No! By taking the proper safety precautions and using the correct measurements, you can easily create your own lava lamp! This is what M.A.D. Science is all about- discovering the magic of science using spectacular experiments that allow the construction of testable predictions and solutions that help make sense of the world around us. M.A.D. Science includes five such experiments: Alien Guts, Non- Newtonian Liquid, Wind Tubes, Balloon Magic and making a Lava Lamp. Each experiment is not only fun, but covers important TEKS standards as well.nnAlien Guts- The truth is out there. Well. More specifically, all over your hands. Probably your shirt and shoes toonNon-Newtonian Liquid- Is this quicksand in a cup? nLava Lamp- It’s hip, it’s psychedelic, it’s bubbly with all sorts of colors. Who knew ingredients you’d find at home could be this groovy when mixed together?nWind Tube: Can you fill up a 25 foot long bag with only one breath of air? After learning the science behind this awesome trick, you will!nBalloon Magic: Stab it, burn it, and it still won’t pop! Find out why with this awesome experiment!n

M.A.D Science (Additional Presentation)

Jug O’ Fire- What happens when you put 91% alcohol into a 5 gallon jug and light it on fire? Only one way to find out!nBoo Bubbles-If ghosts could blow bubbles, this is probably would it would look like. nElephant Toothpaste- Have you ever stayed up late at night and wondered what would happen when potassium iodide is mixed with concentrated hydrogen peroxide? Well now you can sleep steady after seeing how amazing making elephant toothpaste can be!n

Aerodynamics Workshop - Paper Rocket

Humanity’s quest to venture outside of our home planet would not be possible without the technology and materials required to obtain the 25,000 MPH speed needed to break free from the confinement of Earth’s lower atmosphere. In the years following World War II, scientists from the United States of America and the Soviet Union raced to develop a powerful rocket propulsion system that would be able to send the first human into outer space. This era came to be known as the “Space Race,”- the ultimate goal of which was landing a man on the moon. nWith elements based in engineering, aerodynamics, and imagination, this workshop will pit student against student, each racing to engineer and launch the furthest flying rocket!n

Engineering Workshop - Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself

You’ve made a new friend. His name is Eggburt. While he’s a pretty cool guy, he’s a little on the crazy side. Uh oh. nYou see, Eggburt is a bit of a daredevil and has chosen you to help keep him safe. Eggburt has three challenges in mind:n 1. Survive being hit by a car.n 2. Cliff diving using a homemade parachute. Andn 3. Being launched off a catapult.nIt’s up to you to keep him safe. Are you up to the challenge?n

Creative Workshop - Create Your Own Gameboard

Playing games is an easy and excellent way to spend unhurried, enjoyable time together. As an added bonus, board games are also rich in learning opportunities. They can help satisfy your student’s competitive urges and the desire to master new skills and concepts.nGames don't need to be overtly academic to be educational, however. Just by virtue of playing them, board games can teach important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and enjoying interaction with others. Board games can foster the ability to focus, and lengthen your child's attention span by encouraging the completion of an exciting, enjoyable game. Even simple board games like Chutes and Ladders offer meta-messages and life skills: Your luck can change in an instant — for the better or for the worse. The message inherent in board games is: Never give up. Just when you feel despondent, you might hit the jackpot and ascend up high, if you stay in the game for just a few more moves.nThis workshop will allow your students to create their own challenges, lessons, and tribulations from scratch. Bringing their creativity and team work into the spotlight to shine!n
