Cooperative learning and teamwork are one of the most valuable skills students can take with them into the “real world.” Gifted and talented students need opportunities to apply their skills and talents in real life situations. In this session participants will learn successful strategies for implementing teamwork activities into any subject or classroom situation. Everyone will participate in several hand-on activities and projects. Through these fun and exciting challenges teachers will gain new strategies for helping their G/T students develop leadership abilities, creative problem solving skills, and to work as independent groups.

The Brain behind the Gifts (6 Hour GT Update)
Understanding why the brain of a gifted and talented child is essential to designing curriculum and projects for their needs. In this workshop participants will learn about brain based learning as it applies to gifted children. Everyone will walk away from this session with a better understanding of how the brain acquires and process new information. The presenter will cover how emotion, physical activity, and nutrition all affect learning. Participants will see strategies for improving memory and cognition. The group will investigate how all of the key concepts are unique for gifted and talented students.

The Gifted and Talented Refresher Course (6 Hour GT Update)
During this professional development day teachers will get an overview of key gifted and talented concepts. This workshop is a great way to start a new school year or semester. The presenter will discuss the new research and activities in the field of gifted education. The session will cover the nature of gifted students, the social and emotional need of the gifted, and why creativity is so important in a G/T curriculum. This workshop is appropriate for all school staff developments and specialized group workshops. The presentation is hands-on, motivating, and will show teachers why G/T students deserve differentiated approach to learning.

Team Quest Club for Gifted and Talented Children (6 Hour GT Update)
In this workshop format the school can purchase an all inclusive classroom kit with complete instructions, materials and assessment tools. Each classroom teacher would receive everything they need to have students complete the projects. The instruction manual would provide all the necessary student instructions, materials lists and grading rubric for each project. Schools have the option to select the number of projects per classroom. The activities are hands-on, high interest and in-depth team-based. Each kit includes most the materials and supplies needed for each team. Each project is to be completed by one team of students in one hour sessions and can span from several days to several weeks depending on the depth and complexity the teacher chooses. During the in- service session, teachers will see and experience each activity, review how to use the materials, and have a chance to ask questions. This format is the most comprehensive way for a school to get G/T students in the regular classroom working together to apply their skills and knowledge in a real life setting. The kit provides ways for teachers to differentiate projects and activities by grade or ability level. Kits are available for Grades: 1– 2, 3-5 and 6-8.

The M.A.D. Science Workshop
The Magic and Discovery Science Workshop gives teachers tools to motivate students and get into the “magic” of science. Magic is a tool that can be used to capture the imagination of students while teaching them important academic lessons. Participants will explore how science is applied to magic and real life. Participants will learn how to turn everyday materials into fun and enriching science magic. The focus of the workshop is investigating how the scientific method is used in research, learning, and understanding of scientific concepts. All will walk away with a new perspective on discovering the world around them.

Helping Gifted Students Discover the Magic of Math
Format 1: Discovering the Magic of Math is an exciting hands-on workshop that shows teachers how to demonstrate magic illusions that are affected by math. In this session teachers learn to perform a variety of mathematical routines using magic. The program is designed to help students develop observational and thinking skills in arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and patterning. This training will investigate instructional strategies for developing creative thinking for G/T students. At the end of the day teachers receive a Math Magic Kit that they will use to demonstrate their new skills in the classroom. Each teacher also receives a copy of Greg Laufer’s book, “Discovering the Magic Math.” Fee:

Magic Kit: $75 each
Format 2: In this workshop format several top math or G/T students are selected from each classroom. The students and their teacher attend a one or two day “Math Magic” training program where they learn the math behind the magic. In this hands-on workshop students and teachers will problem solve to figure out how magic illusions can be created with mathematics, they will learn the actual illusions and they will practice and perform many of the illusions at the end of the training. Through the activities teachers will develop new methods for challenging their G/T students in creative thinking strategies. After the workshop is completed, students and teacher take their new found skills back to their classrooms to be performed, discussed, and analyzed by the class. This concept allows students to look at math from a new perspective. It is a great motivational tool for bringing fun into the math classroom. This format is a great way to get the whole school to “Discover the Magic of Math.” Each classroom will receive a copy of Greg Laufer’s book “Discovering the Magic of Math” and a Magic Kit containing all the props needed to perform the illusions for their classroom.
