Nature and Needs of Gifted/Talented Students
(6 Hours)
In this course, participants will learn about the cognitive, social, and emotional characteristics of gifted students. The topics of this course focus on research about G/T students, legal issues, and state guidelines for implementing a successful program. The class will discuss brain based research applications for G/T students.
Differentiated Curriculum for Gifted Students (6 Hours)
In this course, participants will learn about traditional methods of reaching gifted students as well as newly developed methods. Participants will learn what differentiation truly means and what it should look like for gifted students. Participants will also learn what is required by Texas law and what best instructional practices should be followed. This workshop will focus on the “how-to” of differentiation. Several strategies will be discussed and explored. Participants will leave with differentiated lessons ready for the classroom.
Social and Emotional Need of Gifted Students
(6 Hours)
Through the identification of individuals and environments that influence the social and emotional development of the G/T students, teachers will explore the implications of these developmental needs on gifted/talented programming. Strategies that foster understanding of the social and emotional needs of G/T students will also be examined.
Identification and Assessment of Gifted Students (6 Hours)
Participants will gain understanding of how to implement Texas law and the State Board of Education rule concerning the assessment and identification of gifted and talented students. Participants will also learn about methods of assessment that help accurately identify the needs of the gifted students in a district.
Creativity and Instructional Strategies for Gifted Students (6 Hours)
The essence of innovation is creativity, in thought, process and outcome. This course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the conceptual foundations and definitions of creativity, documented brain research underlying exceptional cognition and/or creativity, and the multiple perspectives and manifestations of creativity. Discussions will focus on the history and nature of creativity; theories of creativity; the role of innovation and transformation; assessment and measurement tools; environmental support of the creative process; and teaching and learning applications.
